No one likes paying delivery so this is an area we have spent a lot of time looking at the cost of shipping and how to make it as close to carbon neutral and affordable, these are a few of the things we have tried.
- No delivery charge - this created a large volume of small orders which greatly increased our shipping carbon by over 300%, this was not great for the planet and not great for our business as we quite often lost money on about a third of orders ( if we continued doing this we wouldn't of stayed in business for long and would of created huge amounts of un-necessary carbon ).
- We moved all deliveries over to a premium next day service as default and charged what it cost - Our sales went down by over 40% ( not great if you want to stay in business.
- We arrived at our current system of charging only what it costs us and anytime we have saved money on shipping we have lowered our shipping costs.
So the solution was to charge what it actually cost us but then we encountered another issue.
We pride ourselves on honesty and transparency so we realised that we were actually making an additional 10% profit when someone bought multiple items, so when we said we didn't make money on delivery, it wasn't 100% true.
So we thought “ why not encourage our customers to buy bigger quantities and pass the saving onto our customers” , everyone wins , we can still confidently say we don't make money on delivery and our customers save an additional 10% , good for our customers who are really feeling the pinch and great for our mission to reduce our carbon footprint.
Please note the additional discount is off the lowest priced item but you will also be able to get any other discount off the full order.
We are going to test this and see what people think , we may keep this as a permanent discount based on how well it does.
