Switching to Compostable Doesn’t Have to Be a Headache.
We know the story: you want to do the right thing for the planet, but you’re worried about costs, complicated ordering, and staff getting confused.
At The Pure Option™, we believe going green should be as easy as your morning coffee. We’ve moved away from "special projects" and turned sustainability into simple, everyday habits. Here is how we help you make the switch without the stress in 14 days.
-
The Traffic-Light System: Stop the guesswork. We help you categorise your packaging into Green (Go-to compostables), Amber (Trialing), and Red (Phase out). It makes ordering foolproof for your team.
-
"Right-Sizing" Your Costs: Plant-based packaging is a premium product, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. By moving to "on-request" cutlery and napkins, most of our clients save enough waste to completely offset the switch.
-
Trial Before You Commit: Don’t overhaul everything overnight. We encourage a simple Notice → Test → Standardise rhythm. Try one bowl or cup for two weeks, see how it performs, and then roll it out.
-
No Specialist Needed: You don’t need a "Sustainability Manager." Our tools are designed for your existing team to manage alongside their daily tasks.
Traffic Light System
The traffic light system is a simple visual way that we all understand, so assigning your existing products to one of the traffic light colours is something your team can identify with without the need to training as we instinctively know that green is good, red is bad.
| Status | Action | Items (Examples) |
|---|---|---|
| 🟢 GREEN | Preferred: Only order these plant-based, compostable versions. | Compostable coffee cups, PLA cold lids, wooden stirrers. |
| 🟡 AMBER | Allowed: Use if Green stock is unavailable or for specific technical needs. | Recyclable paper bags, specific leak-proof containers under trial. |
| 🔴 RED | Phase Out: Do not reorder. Use remaining stock then switch to Green. | Plastic straws, polystyrene boxes, single-use plastic sauce pots |
How to Use This Template
-
Pick Your Top 10: Start by identifying your 10 highest-volume items (e.g., cups, lids, sauce pots) to have the biggest immediate impact.
-
Assign an Owner: Give one team member the "green hat" each week to review this list and manage orders.
-
Brief the Team: Place this list near your ordering station or in the stockroom so everyone knows the "why" behind the switch.
-
Test Before You Standardise: Before moving an item from Amber to Green, run a 2-week trial to check for leak rates and customer feedback.
