If you’ve ever ordered a bakery treat or opened a premium hot takeaway bag and thought, "What is this smooth, frosty, slightly translucent paper that feels like a crisp winter morning?"—congratulations, you’ve met Glassine.
At The Pure Option, our lifelong mission is to defeat petroleum-based plastics (Dead Dinos). Glassine is one of our favourite allies because it does a magic trick that normal paper can’t do: it resists oil, grease, water, and air entirely on its own, without a single drop of plastic coating.
How is it Made? (Spoiler Alert: Lots of Squishing)
People often look at Glassine and think, "It looks a bit shiny... surely there’s a hidden layer of fossil-fuel nastiness in there?"

Glassine is made entirely from wood pulp. All of our wood cellulose is harvested exclusively from certified sustainable forests, meaning for every tree harvested to make our hot food bags, a bunch of enthusiastic new trees are planted to keep the cycle going.
The paper pulp goes through a manufacturing process called supercalendering. After the paper is formed, it gets beaten and squished by massive, heavy, heated rollers. This intense pressure collapses all the tiny air pockets and aligns the wood fibers so tightly that it changes the structure of the paper. This creates that iconic, frosty, semi-transparent look and gives it its natural air, water, and grease-resistant superpowers. No plastic lining, just extreme paper gymnastics.
